Medco Pharmacy, part of the Express Scripts family of pharmacies*, offers convenient ordering, delivery and support for long-term prescription drugs while reducing costs for both you and the Health Plan. With Medco Pharmacy, you receive up to a 90-day supply of long-term medications by paying a single mail-order copayment. Prescriptions are conveniently delivered to you by mail, and standard shipping is free. Medco Pharmacy also offers 24/7 telephone access to specialist pharmacists with expertise in medications used to treat specific conditions.

Plan requirement for long term medications

Participants must fill prescriptions for long-term medications (taken for three months or more) through Medco Pharmacy. Each prescription for a long-term medication may be filled up to twice at a network retail pharmacy, with the applicable retail copayment. All subsequent prescriptions for each long-term medication must be filled through Medco Pharmacy. If you continue to purchase a long-term medication at a retail pharmacy after the first two fills at a retail pharmacy, you will pay the entire cost of the medication.

New to Medco Pharmacy? Getting started is simple.

Start by making sure that you have at least a two-week supply of your maintenance medication on hand (new prescriptions filled through Medco Pharmacy typically take eight days to be delivered). If necessary, ask your doctor for a 30-day prescription to be filled at retail pharmacy. Then take advantage of the benefits of ordering your prescription drugs from Medco Pharmacy in one of two ways:

Option 1: Fill your prescription by mail

  • First, get a prescription from your doctor for each long-term medication* (for medications to be taken three months or longer, ask for a 90-day prescription) that you or a family member is taking.
  • Second, complete a mail order form (see below) and mail it and your new prescription(s) to Medco Pharmacy.

Option 2: Ask your doctor to contact Medco Pharmacy to fill your prescription

  • Provide your physician with your H&R Funds No. (labeled as ID No. on your Prescription Drug ID card) and ask him or her to call Express Scripts at (888) 327-9791 for faxing instructions.

After Express Scripts receives your order, your medication will usually arrive within eight days, and you will be billed later.

*As announced in 2012, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) Medco and Express Scripts completed a merger of the two companies.  The combined company has been in the process of changing the name on all of its communications to Express Scripts.  Until the process is complete, you'll sometimes see the Medco name in pharmacy communications and on the Web (the pharmacy is still called "Medco Pharmacy").   Please continue to refill your prescriptions as you have been using your current prescription drug ID card, refill order forms, the Express Scripts website or the toll-free number on your ID card.
