Coordination with Medicare
If you are covered by the AFTRA Health PIan on the basis of current employment status and you or your spouse are eligible for Medicare Part A, the AFTRA Health Plan is primary. You may elect to have Medicare as your primary insurer but, if you do, the Plan is prohibited by federal law from making any secondary payments on Medicare covered expenses. See “How This Program Works with Medicare.”

If you and/or your spouse are under age 65, are determined to be disabled by the Social Security Administration, become entitled to Medicare after 29 months of disability and do not have active coverage, Medicare will pay your benefits first and the AFTRA Health Plan will pay second. In addition, if you or a dependent is disabled due to end‑stage renal disease, the Plan will be primary during the period required.
